FAQs
Why do you only accept viewings by appointment only?
The reason why we run viewings by appointment only is to enhance the customers experience. It means customers are able to try pianos in a relaxed and hassle-free environment without other pianists playing at the same time. You can sit down and soak up the beautiful tone of each individual piano. Customers can stay as long as they would like with a lots of complimentary tea and coffee!
What warranty do you offer?
Our warranties at Thompson Pianos cover many different elements of the piano, the most important being the structural integrity of the instrument.
We cover all of the major parts of an acoustic instrument such as the soundboard, bridges, iron frame and rest plank. If any issues occur with any of these parts within a warranty period then Thompson Pianos will offer the following: A full refund or an alternative instrument or, if the issue is more minor, a repair to be carried out in your home.
All of our instruments under £1,500.00 are guaranteed for at least 1 year. We offer a 2-year warranty on instruments priced between £1,500.00 - £2,500.00 and a 3-year warranty on instruments priced above £2,500.00. We also offer an extended warranty for all those customers requiring extra peace of mind, this allows you to extend your warranty for an additional 3 years at a cost of £250.00.
Please note that general wear and tear is not covered by Thompson Pianos. This includes sun fading and regulation and tuning. These are all elements that are part and parcel of owning an acoustic instrument.
Sticky keys may occur during the first few weeks of ownership, which is mainly due to humidity changes and fluctuations in room temperature. This is a common occurrence with some acoustic instruments and can be easily rectified by a local piano tuner/ technician and is usually part of their standard tuning service. If you come across any of these issues, then please contact us via info@thompsonpianos.co.uk and we’d be delighted to help put you in touch with a reputable piano tuner who covers your area.
All acoustic pianos, whether new or used, are likely to need tuning after 6 weeks from delivery; this is known as the ‘settling in period’. It is advised that you get your piano tuned by a reputable piano tuner/ technician. If you need any help in finding a piano tuner then, as above, please let us know via info@thompsonpianos.co.uk and we will do our best to assist you.
We also recommend the ‘Pianoforte Tuners Association’. Having your piano tuned by a PTA Member gives you peace of mind that the work is carried out to the highest standard, ensuring an accurate, stable and lasting tuning. Please visit www.pianotuner.org.uk for more information.
All warranties are taken extremely seriously at Thompson Pianos and we only make these available if proper care of the instrument is taken. It is very important that you keep the piano in an environment that does not vary in temperature and averages between 18°C and 21°C. You will also need to ensure you keep the piano within an environment that is between 40% -70% humidity. If you are uncertain of how to do this then basic humidity devices can be purchased online for between £8.50 - £15.00. If you have any questions or need any advice regarding this, please get in touch via info@thompsonpianos.co.uk
Avoid underfloor heating at all costs unless you have purchased a special piano heat deflector mat, which can be purchased through Thompson Pianos.

Do you rent pianos?
In a nut shell, yes!
Thompson Pianos rent pianos with the option to own.
With pianos becoming increasingly popular, why not rent the piano first to see if you like it before committing to the purchase?
Have a look at our rent-to-own instrument product pages to gather further information regarding all the pianos we offer. There is a vast range of quality used acoustic pianos for selection. Most of our product listings have multiple images, descriptions, measurements and we are working hard on making sure demo videos are provided for each instrument. Renting a piano from us has never been easier; you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your own home! However, if you’d like a more personal touch you can either come and visit us in person or we can arrange a virtual appointment for you. All you need to do is just drop us a quick email: info@thompsonpianos.co.uk
Simplified summary of our rent-to-own
If you pay all of your monthly payments in full, during your pre-selected payment plan, then the piano is yours to keep. No strings attached (pardon the pun!)
If you want to cancel the agreement after having paid half of your payment plan, for example 6 of a 12-month plan and the piano has been well cared for and kept in original condition (undamaged), then we will cancel the plan and arrange for the piano to be collected.
Please note that if you are considering cancelling your piano plan then please contact our customer service team as we cannot arrange piano collection without prior notification.
Thompson Pianos have decided to have a maximum of 1 rental per customer; however, educational institutions are exempt from this.
Are the used pianos at Thompson Pianos refurbished?
Many used pianos that you see online being advertised use words such as ‘reconditioned’, ‘completely restored’, ‘like new’ etc. All piano and general music store owners have their own views on the matter and it is a very grey area within the industry so be careful! Many of our used pianos are sourced locally and purchased from private homes, having had very little use and, in many cases, have been people’s pride and joy. We pay a premium for our used instruments and our piano purchasing team have an extremely strict buying criteria that must be met. Our pianos are brought in house once purchased and any work that we deem necessary to sell the piano is undertaken.
What room should my piano go in?
Your piano should go in a room that is dry, doesn’t vary too much in temperature (ideally between 18°C and 21°C) and is within 40% -70% humidity.
Living rooms, dining rooms and music rooms are usually the ideal place. Rather than state where to have the piano, it’s probably best to advise where not to have the piano. For example, conservatories and utility rooms next to washing machines and tumble dryers are not recommended.
If you are unsure, please contact a member of the Thompson Pianos team and we will be able to advise. Everyone’s home is different, don’t worry we’ve got you covered!

Free pianos are listed on eBay or Facebook, what is there to lose?
‘Free’… It normally sounds too good to be true and the reality is, it often is. If you are considering getting a piano from a market place such as eBay, gumtree or Facebook we can’t stress enough the importance of hiring a local piano tuner to go and have a look at the piano on your behalf. They will check for loose pins, cracks in the bridge and splits in the soundboard which are just a few essential elements of an acoustic piano to consider. This service will likely cost around £70.00. Moving pianos is extremely expensive and the removal cost will be around £150 for an upright and £250 for a grand piano. These are examples of prices based locally and can often result in being more expensive than this.
Repairing a piano back to a playable standard isn’t cheap, so we would always recommend buying a piano with a warranty and that has had all of the necessary repairs. Remember, you want a piano to last a number of years.
We’ve had many experiences with ‘free’ pianos, more often than not these types of pianos have come to the end of their working lives as instruments and are ready to be disposed of and it’s hard-seeing customers waste money. Our advice is to stay away from free pianos.
